Who We Desire: Beauty, Attraction, and Power

Is attraction personal, or political? Can we truly control who we are attracted to—or are our desires shaped by deep-rooted societal forces?

Desire often feels innate — but it is also a product of the world we live in. From media and pop culture to colonial histories and racialised beauty standards, this event explores how the politics of desirability intersect with identity, privilege, and exclusion.

Some Questions We’ll Explore:

·Are racial preferences harmless?

·Can a fetish be ethically neutral, or are certain fetishes inherently problematic?

·What role does power play in sexual relationships, and how do we navigate the dynamics of power and control?

·Is it possible to desire someone from another race in a way that is free from exploitation or power imbalances?
