Black entrepreneurship is often celebrated as liberation. We are encouraged to buy Black, build Black wealth, and celebrate those who make it to the top.
But can Black wealth produce black freedom?
A Black-owned business can still exploit Black workers. Black wealth can still be concentrated in the hands of a few. Black success can still exist alongside the economic abandonment of poor and working-class Black people.
This conversation asks whether individual Black wealth can ever amount to collective freedom. We’ll examine the racial wealth gap, “buy black” politics, black elites, redistribution, and what happens to those of us who cannot (or will not) accumulate.
