Religion in Black Britain: A Force for Freedom or Control?

Spiritual practices in Black communities embody a profound tension. They are simultaneously sources of liberation and instruments of oppression.

They build community and inspire resistance, while also signaling empire’s enduring influence.

This workshop invites participants to explore religion’s dual legacies, examining how spiritual life has both empowered and constrained us throughout history.

Through critical reflection and dialogue, we will confront the complex interplay of faith, freedom, and power.

Together we will consider;

  • The continuing role of spiritual traditions in shaping identity today.

  • How Black communities reinterpreted faith as a force of resistance.

  • How religion was used by empire as a system of control, exclusion, and violence.

  • Where faith continues to liberate, and where it can still reproduce control and silence.

Through shared discussion, we will listen and engage with other people’s experiences with openness and curiosity.
