Decolonising Beauty: Whiteness, Aesthetic Labour & The Right to Be Ugly

Would it mean to decolonise beauty rather than simply diversify it?

Beauty is deeply political. It is a biopolitical regime that sorts, ranks and disciplines bodies.

Rooted in colonial histories and the construction of whiteness as the aesthetic ideal, beauty reproduces racialised hierarchies of humanity and social worth.

In a world that rewards conformity to dominant beauty ideals, what happens to those of us who fall outside of them? What are the social, economic and material consequences of being undesirable?

Join us as we examine beauty as a system of power and ask what it would mean to decolonise it. We will explore the labour required to make our bodies acceptable, and the penalties imposed on those who cannot or will not comply.
